Blade: The blade of this sword is hand forged and finished with 12 stages of polishing and sharpening. The steel used is high quality carbon steel, which is very pure, and keeps its edge very well.

Clay Tempered: The blade has been clay tempered in order to harden the cutting edge while still allowing the spine to remain flexible. The tempering process imbues the blade with a distinctive Hamon (blade pattern).

Folded Steel: This blade had been folded fifteen times, creating 32768 layers. This traditional sword forging method involves repeatedly heating, hammering and folding the swords steel. The effect of this work evens out and homogenises the carbon content, making for a stronger, more flexible blade.

High quality at an affordable price

The blade and fittings are much higher quality than I was expecting for the price. The saya is much darker than the image on the site though - more of a navy blue color, which actually looks really nice. Only complaint is the saya doesn’t fit the habaki well, so the sword can’t be sheathed completely.

Dara Katana

I'm very pleased with the Dara Katana. It has exceeded my expectations. The quality of finish is very good. The edge (ha) on it is sharpened to perfection, the folded steel pattern & hamon on the blade are exquisite. The Tsuba & habaki fit to the saya is pleasingly precise. I have to say the customer service from Blades Pro has been second to none also.

Hi Luke,
Thank you so much for leaving us a review. This sword is really beautiful and we hope you enjoy it for a long time! Always happy to help! Thanks - The BladesPro Team

beautiful sword

havent used it for cutting tatami mats or anything but paper tested it and its got a good edge. fittings are nice and tight and the blade is beautiful with the folding lines and the hamon. the habaki is well fitted to the blade and beautifuly marked.tsuba and tsuka are well finished. tsuka ito is reasonably tight. the saya and sagea are beautifuly finished.it is sent well oiled so it wond arrive rusted. and the sword fits into the saya incredibly nice and snug especialy for a sub £2000 (seen many with terribly lose fitting). thesword its a stunning piece of art that i will love for years to come.

Hi Stuart - fantastic to hear! Really happy you like the sword :) Thanks for leaving a review, too. - The BladesPro Team

Katana purchase

Katana excellent for the price but would have liked the customs charges to have appeared on the invoice.

Hi Stephen,

Thanks for your feedback, and very happy you like the Katana! It's a beautiful one, that's for sure. Really appreciate you taking the time to leave us a review.

As for the customs charges - I hear you on that. Unfortunately it's a tricky one, as it's not something we're able to control -- some packages are picked up and some aren't, and the amount can vary based on the customs' office's discretion, so if we were to charge up-front, it might inflate the order cost unnecessarily, which wouldn't really seem right. To illustrate some potential customs charges, we do try to provide some estimates on in our customs information section here: https://www.bladespro.co.uk/pages/shipping-and-returns-terms-and-conditions#customs

But, I do hear you on that, and we're working on a better solution to make it clearer during the order process. So thank you for your feedback, and we'll keep working on that so that hopefully it's clearer in the future :)

Have a great one!
Thanks again - The BladesPro Team

Reasonable sword for the price.

I was reasonably happy with the sword but I have to say I have purchased better for very similar cost. The workmanship is perfectly acceptable but unfortunately I find the fit of the sword into the Saya looser than it should be would fully inserted.

How is your sword made?

Sword Crafting In 3 Simple Steps

All our swords are hand-crafted using traditional forging methods that have been in place for thousands of years.

Click the tabs above to see exactly how we'll make your sword - from Design, to Forging, to Finishing.

1. Design

Designed by experts.

First, your sword is designed by experts who've crafted thousands of swords. Our product team carefully plans the combination of aesthetics and features that will make up the sword:

Aesthetics: Shape, design, colours, ornaments and decorations, and fittings to determine the look and style of the final piece.

Features: Practicalities such as blade length, blade width, steel type, handle and scabbard dimensions, as well as weight and whether or not the sword will include a Bo-Hi.

2. Forging

Forged by Craftsmen... by hand.

For the inner core of the blade, impurities are removed and steel created via the smelting process. The carbon level is varied (higher or lower) to get a result of softer or harder steel. The brick-sized piece of prepared steel is then forged until soft, and hammered until elongated. It's then folded over and over until all impurities are removed and the desired shape is achieved.

For the outer part of the blade, the heat/pound/fold technique is applied up to 3,000 times to create a strong blade, which is then painted with a clay and charcoal mixture and thrust into water to finalise.

3. Finishing

Finishing touches.

The blade is then polished and a handle attached. From there, the sword is adorned with desired fittings and ornaments, engraved (if desired) and lacquer is applied to the wooden scabbard to create a beautiful, functional piece. It's then carefully packed and shipped out using our courier service, arriving at your door safe and sound.
